Sunrise to Sunset

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAYesterday I could have taken photos of the winter sunset after a gloomy and cloudy day. I had already taken quite a few photos of the amazing sunrise.  Bookends of glory within between of somber moods of cold.  My sister and brother came up to see about working at the shop, helping my dad de-clutter his massive inventory.  They both stayed over night at our place last night.  What was remarkable after they ate a late night meal, was that my sister was trying to help me make the bed for my brother. What happened next started a series of things that wasn’t meant to be!

She reached to the one far corner to tuck in the sheet and boom, the big double bed caved in.  Inexplicably Ken slept through that noise.  My brother was finishing his meal downstairs and he heard the crash just above him. Soon he came up to see what our dilemma was.  We finally took the mattress off, the bed frame apart except one of the pieces because it was stuck.  My brother tried to bang it apart without being too loud, that didn’t work.  Finally the three of us (50% of us siblings in one room) decided that the mattress could go on the floor and my brother could sleep that way.  He did.

Today, my husband who had slept through ALL of the commotion was able to bang out the frame and we put the bed back together. To make extra sure that this over 100 year old bed would NOT fall apart again, he torque screwed the horizontal planks in with four screws.  This old bed and dresser has been in our family for over a century. I hope that others now can sleep in it without any more drama.

So, back to the sunrise. It was a glorious beginning of a day. Today it all ended well.  Sadly our football team we were rooting for in the 30 degree F. temp lost again. 62 – 20.  That is the end of their season where they have lost all ten games, it has to be a real downer for the team players, some of them are my former students.

Anyway, the sun will come up…tomorrow.

Colorful Sundogs and Delayed Sunsets

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAI was able to capture the later sunset and colorful, rainbow like sundogs. The pictures will help explain that better. We are getting longer days for which we are all thankful. Today was negative 15 degrees F and it was a good thing I didn’t know that as I started my car to go to work.  I KNEW it was cold, but not THAT cold.  The day before there was a biting wind so the windchill was probably that or worse!

We are into Week 5 of our semester with about ten more weeks to go. I am helping my folks clear out their place and burning the extra letters and other debris that they have been storing. My Mom has been a very prolific letter writer over the years and I want to “bless” people with some of the pictures I have found for each of the sibling’s families and my cousins and other more distant relatives.  I have created about 20 different piles of various density, mostly pictures.

My sister came up for the THIRD time from the Cities which is quite a sacrifice because she lives five hours away. She helped this last time combing through all the letters and pictures that were left. Now there are only boxes full of tax returns from ten years ago up to last year.  My Mom will plow through that.

So, when I got home last night I promptly started a bonfire, the third one so far and had the backdrop of the setting sun. On the way home through I was able to capture the colorful sundogs. Life is good…as long as I get enough sleep and keep one step ahead of my students.

Amazing November, Semester soon ending!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Sunrise on the plains, this was a murky morning. We are down to Week 12 out of 16 weeks and essentially, after our Thanksgiving in the end of November, then it is a downhill slide to the end of the semester. I’ll have my 35 composition students give their powerpoint presentations on their last research paper and then it is grading time and we are out of here!  The weather yesterday was 75 degrees which is unusual for November but it goes along with our remarkable summer and fall we experienced.  Technically we could be getting snow at any time and it would stay until March or April.  For now the grass is green and the sunsets have been magnificent.

The above is a sunset that I caught about 3-4 days ago. I got a LOT of responses on it from my FB friends. I guess I don’t realize how fortunate I am to capture these scenes in the sky that last almost a half hour. This one did and when I thought I was done taking pictures, I turned around and there were MORE photos to take.  The comments that I get from others is that they wish they could see these sunsets like I do or other “magnificent” or “spectacular” kinds of comments.  One would think people would get tired of these colorful sky photos but that is NOT the case, people seem to soak it up.

So, one thing I learned today was that the heavenlies are looking down to see what we do with the talents that we have been given.  I’m hoping that I can encourage my students tomorrow and let them know they are making great progress in learning how to format APA type research papers.  I just graded 17 of these papers and they are all over the board, not conforming to the rules of APA but I will get them there in about four weeks.
