Kazakh Proverbs – Dignity, Respect, Khan (Part III)

Dignity (Namıs)

*255-1: Böriktiniŋ namısı bir.

The fur hat’s (i.e. the mens’) dignity is one (i.e. the same / held in common)..

*409-3: Qoyandı qamıs öltirer; Erdі nамıs öltirer.

Reed kills the rabbit; dignity kills the man.

Revere (Sıī)

*458-1: Ömirlik sıī – sıī, ötkinshi sıī – qiy.

Eternal reward – revere, momentary esteem – dung.

*483-4: Sıīġa – sıī, sıraġa – bal.

When esteemed – esteem, when given beer – give honey in return.

Khan (Han)

447: Özge elde sultan bolġansha, öz elimde ultan bolaiyın.

It is better to be the sole to your own people, than the sultan of another people.

*535-1: Hannan ädilet ketse, qaradan uyat ketedi.

When justice departs from the khan, shame departs from the deceivers (literally “the black”).
